Color-Shifting ‘Root Beer’ Harley-Davidson Softail Really Is ‘Candy Coated’

Going against the grain and choosing to break convention doesn’t always work out. If you manage to pull it off, you’ll wind up with a bike that turns more heads than a doctor telling you to cough. If you botch it, however, the results can be disastrous.

In the case of this gorgeous 2015 Harley-Davidson Softail, which is the focus of this week’s “Wicked-Cool Web Finds,” the former applies. We caught up with the candied bike on eBay, where it was recently offered for $22,000.

The first thing you’ll undoubtedly notice about the Softail is the unique paint job. If it looks like Root Beer, that’s because it is. A “Candy Root Beer” that is, with a red-flake base coat. Depending on how you look at it in the sunlight, this paint job changes quite a bit. And it looks fantastic from any angle.

There’s more to this ride than paint, of course. Sixteen inch Ape Hangers and chromed Harley hand controls have been fitted. The 36-inch Bassani Fishtail exhaust is a popular choice on modern Softails, and it fits this one perfectly.

DNA Mammoth spoke wheels are wrapped in Vee Rubber tires. The fenders hug the rolling stock courtesy of a two-inch front drop and even greater rear drop. Almost everything else is chrome — the rear swing arm kit, dash extension, and a whole lot more.

Rounding out the package are Harley visors and a Lepara bare bones seat. The overall look is simple yet stunning. It’s a testament to how easy it is to make a newer Softail into a sweet looking custom. All you need is a fancy paint job and a whole bunch of chrome. Oh, and money!

Even though the builder of this 2015 Softail took a risk with his color choice, things turned out just fine.
