A Look at the Harley-Davidson 2012 Model Line
32-Models and a Whole Lot of Options
by Jason Giacchino
If sheer size of a model line is any indication of things to come, Harley-Davidson has big things in the works for 2012.
Sportster:
Six Sportster models look to grace the H-D line for 2012, ranging from the affordable Dark Custom roadster posture of the Iron 883 to the track-inspired performance of the XR1200X. Back for its first full year of production is the Sportster 1200 Custom, the motorcycle that introduced the web-based H-D Bike Builder factory customization process. Using Bike Builder, customers can personalize their 1200 Custom with seat, handlebar, foot control, wheel, security, paint and engine finish options that are installed right at the factory.
All 2012 Sportster models will have Michelin Scorcher tires with a tread pattern designed, tested and styled specifically for the Sportster motorcycle to provide ideal grip, even wear and longer life. Fifteen Sportster paint options include seven new color choices for 2012. The entire Sportster line consists of the following models:
SuperLow
Iron 883
Sportster 1200 Custom
Nightster
Forty-Eight
XR1200X
Touring:
For 2012, all eight Harley-Davidson Touring models are powered by a Twin Cam 103 engine with Automatic Compression Release and integrated oil cooler, a 6-Speed Cruise Drive transmission, 41.3 mm telescopic front forks, air-adjustable rear shocks and an Isolated Drive System for smooth power delivery.
All Touring models except the Ultra Limited will offer a new “tubeless” Chrome Lace Aluminum Wheel option for ease of tire replacement and repair. Six new colors or color combinations are among the 12 paint options offered within the 2012 Touring model line. The entire Sportster line consists of the following models:
Road King
Road King Classic
Electra Glide Classic
Ultra Classic Electra Glide
Electra Glide Ultra Limited
Street Glide
Road Glide Custom
Road Glide Ultra
V-Rod:
As hard as it is to believe, the V-Rod is already ten-years old and H-D isn’t overlooking that momentous occasion. Through a partnership with legendary automaker, Porsche, and their world-renowned team of engineers, Harley-Davidson created an engine that blends torque and horsepower in the high revving V-Twin Revolution: Fuel injection, dual overhead cams, liquid cooling and 125-horses. The V-Rod group consists of the following models:
Night Rod Special
V-Rod Muscle
V-Rod 10th Anniversary Edition
Dyna:
The crisp low lines and big meaty V-Twin Dyna line returns to 2012 with no less than five unique models, ranging from the old school chopper styling of the Street Bob on over to the more touring friendly Switchback. The Dyna group consists of the following models:
Street Bob
Super Glide Custom
Wide Glide
Fat Bob
Switchback
Softail:
Long, low with nostalgic styling cues, the Softail line comes in with five stunning options. The Dyna group consists of the following models:
Fat Boy
Fat Boy Lo
Blackline
Softail Deluxe
Heritage Softail Classic
Trike:
The three-wheeled pioneer returns for 2012 for ultimate touring and comfort. The trike category is comprised of a single entry:
Tri Glide Ultra Classic
Customs:
CVO, or Custom Vehicle Operation has been in existence since 1999 and takes standard models on the line and turns them into factory customs with unique paint schemes and exclusive accessories not even available through the Screaming Eagle catalog. For 2012 the CVO treatment applies to the following models:
CVO Softail Convertible
CVO Street Glide
CVO Road Glide Custom
CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide
