Declaration of Independents: Finding a Good Indy Mechanic
by Brian Zerkel aka Schumacher

Most independent mechanics--or indys--are good guys who want nothing more than for you to be happy with their work. A lot of them are fairly speedy in making repairs, while others are a bit slower. One isn't necessarily better than the other, but it's nice to know up front which you're dealing with.
All of the things I have written about here are things I've looked for over the years. I'm lucky to have a trusty indy less than a half mile from my home. There are others around here, but the one I use fits all of the criteria. Here's what I look for in an independent mechanic.
