Harley-Davidson has long produced high-end bikes, but the 2012 model year will see the advent of a totally new kind of motorcycle in the Dyna Switchback. Previously, customers have had to choose between different functions in their bikes; a touring motorcycle would be bulkier with saddlebags and storage, while a sleek road bike would not have the necessary storage space for longer trips. The Dyna Switchback aims to provide the best of both worlds, with a fully modifiable frame that allows for the customer to completely customize the riding experience each time he or she takes to the road. Read on for a brief overview of this exciting new model.

Overview of the Dyna Switchback

The standard model of the Dyna Switchback is that of a custom touring model, with color-matching hard saddlebags and a fork-mounted windshield. However, these items can be removed in a matter of seconds, without tools. Then, the motorcycle is transformed into a custom street cruiser that sports a mini-ape handlebar and gleaming headlamp nacelle. This provides the ultimate flexibility for the bike so that it can be used appropriately in all types of driving situations.

Motorcycle Specs

The Twin Cam 103 V-Twin engine is featured prominently in the Dyna Switchback. With a 1690 cc capacity, this engine is rated to 100 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. This engine is also a crucial reason why the Dyna Switchback is the lightest weight of any of the custom touring motorcycles in Harley's lineup. The bike is ready to ride at just 718 pounds, almost 100 pounds lighter than the Harley-Davidson Road King. The low-profile front end and tire, as well as premium suspension system components, ensure that the bike is excellent at handling and that it provides a smooth, cushy ride on any road surface.

Appearance and Aesthetic Specs

There is a 2-in-1 muffler system to provide a deep, rough muffler sound. The detachable hard saddlebags are color-matched and feature up to 30 pounds of storage. Wheels in the front are 18 inches and in the back are 17 inches, and each wheel is a black aluminum 5-spoke variety. The motorcycle is also plated with chrome in several different spots, including on the headlamp, the fork and rear shock covers, and the tank console and ignition switch. The seat is a one-piece two-up model that features custom stitching detail, and is designed for a flat-foot stop for most riders.

Harley-Davidson has taken care to make sure that the Dyna Switchback provides both the flare and style of a street cruiser with the comfort and handling of a touring motorcycle. Riders will be happy and comfortable spending an entire day on the bike, and the customizable features ensure that your bike will always have the appropriate look, no matter where you are or where you're going.

Is this the best of both worlds or just another sales gimmick? Voice your opinion here!

David MacPherson (Tue, 01 Nov 2011 22:07:58 -0700): That's what I've been working to get my Sporty to look like. Softail fender, Rad kin g signal lights and bar, Half moon foot boards, quick detatch windshield. and a host of other things. It looks great! Friend saw it for first time said it doesn't even look like a Sporty. Next change Gas tank with dash. I love my Sporty, Maybe a switchback will be my retirement gift to myself! WQe'll see when that day comes.
Kenneth Johnson (Sun, 04 Dec 2011 07:25:32 -0800): Rode mine home yesterday, 12/03/11, what a thrill, super responsive, gret handling, and plenty of punch--beautiful ride.
Bec Moffat (Fri, 13 Jan 2012 04:03:11 -0800): Purchased our 2012 Switchback 3 weeks ago in Oz! Beautiful ride, plenty of grunt and for whoever is on the back with a sissy bar, sweet ride...
Debra Rysdyk (Sun, 15 Jan 2012 19:13:59 -0800): I ride a 2010 Streetglide and keep wondering if I should downsize to the Switchback.....any thoughts out there?
Brad Mathews (Tue, 17 Jan 2012 04:54:09 -0800): yes give me your bike and buy a new one
Patricia Wasson Chandler (Sat, 21 Jan 2012 15:52:44 -0800): The ultimate test is to sit on it and see how it fits you. Don't overthink it except on the price. But you know I'm a Honda girl myself!
Debra Rysdyk (Mon, 23 Jan 2012 22:06:03 -0800): well, it would be less than my Streetglide...that is if I could sell it for more than HD would pay. I might miss the stereo, but the only way to know is test drive it. Next weekend looks like its warming up!
Benjamin Robert Deily (Tue, 24 Jan 2012 12:43:08 -0800): Debra Rysdyk If you would, post your review/opinion after the test drive! Real curious about this bike.
Mike Jackson (Sat, 11 Feb 2012 04:30:18 -0800): Took my test ride Thursday and picked the bike up Friday. Very, very pleased!
(Mon, 20 Feb 2012 07:36:48 -0800): THe bike rides great below 120kph, anything even slightly above, and the vibration makes it unrideable. I thought it was just mine, but it's not, check out other forums, the switchback is a dud!
Bob Groth (Mon, 02 Apr 2012 10:48:59 -0700): Nope...... not a good compromise
Jim McKee (Sun, 29 Jan 2012 13:43:51 -0800): prefer me fat bob!

Patrick Pacheco (Fri, 17 Feb 2012 10:18:27 -0800): I will possibly be picking mine up tomorrow, trading in a 2004 Sportster 1200C for the SB. Can't wait to get out and do some serious riding.
Mark Fread (Tue, 13 Mar 2012 13:50:55 -0700): I just bought a new 2012 Switchback and love it, much better ride then my Heritage for me. I miss my Rinhart exhaust and am thinking about putting true duels on it but Rinehart has not made them as of yet. Does anyone know when they will put them out? Thanks just missing my Rineharts and love my new Black Switchback.
Sophia Lee (Thu, 12 Apr 2012 22:54:08 -0700): I'm a harley bike girl and I am not go on a single biker tour.Who want to ride with me? I am waiting for you on harleypassions ℃σΜ-It's worthy try.
