Harley Davidson Security Options

By -

Installing a Harley Davidson Security system at the factory when you
buy a new bike is important. The cost of replacing a Harley Davidson
motorcycle that has been stolen is considerable if the motorcycle is
never found or brought back in pieces.  Prevention is the best way to
circumvent the costs, and with an investment in security equipment to
protect your motorcycle, you will have a greater chance to deter
thieves or retrieve your motorcycle if it’s stolen.

What Security Options are Available?

A disc lock disables the brake of a Harley Davidson motorcycle,
which means they have to go around the disc lock since the motorcycle
will refuse to move.  While this is a standard security option that
will deter most casual thieves, the fact that it doesn’t lock the bike
to a solid foundation can be problematic (one community story relates
to a bike with this type of lock almost being rolled away on
skateboards before luckily stopped).

A chain and lock system like the Oxford Nemesis Chain and Padlock
with 16 mm hardened steel and anti-pick double locking mechanism can be
used to protect your motorcycle. This option is a little better than
the previous, but again, it cannot stop a good chain cutter.

A shackle lock (U-lock) is very similar to a chain and lock system,
only it comes as a complete unit that’s similar to a large padlock in
many way. A shackle lock can be awkward due to the limited length of
its locking arm (compared to the length of a chain), but you can anchor
your bike effectively to an unmovable object.

A ground anchor is one of the best ways to protect your motorcycle.
This type of security system locks your wheel and bike in place by
anchoring them to an immovable object.  It’s a more complex locking
system than a chain or U-Lock.

There are alarms available to protect your motorcycle from theft
that work by making loud noises, verbally warning the thief in a stern
and commanding voice, and even notifying the owner via email or pager
that someone is tampering with the motorcycle.

Security homing systems like GuidePoint Systems can track your
motorcycle’s speed, location, and direction anywhere in the United
States, Canada, and Mexico. LoJack operates a vehicle location security
system with tracking computers that are monitored by the police. LoJack
has had very good success in locating stolen vehicles.
