How To Polish your Harley Davidson’s Wheels

By -

Polishing a set of Harley Davidson wheels
takes a minimal amount of effort and time, and the cost of the
procedure is quite low as well. On the other hand, the benefits of doing
this easy at-home do-it-yourself project are great; you’ll end up with a
vehicle that has a shine and appeal to it that other motorcycles and
cars on the road do not have. Before you start using a towel, sponge
or brush to polish the wheels on your Harley Davidson, it’s a good idea
to first learn about this process to
complete the job both efficiently and correctly. Doing so will help to
keep your wheels in top condition and appearance for a longer time. Read
on for a step-by-step guide.

Step 1 — Gather the Materials

You’ll need the following tools and materials in order to polish the wheels on your Harley:

  • Chrome cleaning solution
  • Chrome polish
  • Paper towel set
  • Ultra fine brush
  • Sponge and bucket of clean water
  • Rags

Step 2 — Prepare the Wheels

Before you can polish the wheels on your Harley Davidson, you’ll
first need to prepare them adequately. Preparing the wheels basically
entails cleaning them. If you attempt to polish a set of dirty wheels,
or wheels that haven’t properly been cleaned first, not only will the
polish not adhere to the wheels as it should, but you may have
difficulty later on as you try to remove that dirt, grime or debris.

Begin by cleaning off the larger pieces of dirt and debris from the
wheels by hand using a rag or a paper towel set. A sponge and clean
water is also a good way to scrub off the wheels themselves. Be sure to
get into every nook and crevice that you’ll ultimately end up polishing;
any area that shows chrome is fair for you to clean off at this point.
Finally, before you begin to polish, the wheels should be treated with a
chrome polishing solution. Dab a bit of the solution onto a paper towel
or a rag and then use the rag to clean off the entire portion of the
wheel.

Step 3 — Polish the Wheels

Using a small quantity of polish, apply the polish to your fine
brush. The wheels should be fully dry and clean before you begin this
procedure. With small, even and gentle strokes, apply the polish to the
wheel and buff it out completely. For a higher sheen, you may even wish
to use a drill, where you can attach the brush and get a higher buff.

Continue until the entire surface of the wheel has been completed in
this manner. You will need to then allow the polish to set into the
wheel completely before continuing.

Step 4 — Apply Additional Coats

Although this option is not necessary, many people do wish to apply
additional coats of polish to their wheels. This can help to enhance the
overall appearance of the wheels by increasing the sheen that you’ll
see. Typically two or three coats is the total number that are
recommended in order to create a high gloss and shine on your chrome
wheels. Examine the wheels carefully before you begin to place another
coat of polish to determine if you prefer them the way they are or if
another coat will be helpful.
