Motorcycle Lane Splitting Bill Passes in California

lane splitting

One of the biggest debate ever to surround motorcycle riders in the country besides the helmet law, is the lane splitting law, which allows riders to “reasonably” ride between vehicles and share a highway lane with normal traffic.

In what was a 38-0 landslide vote at the California senate, the lane-splitting bill gained more momentum before it heads back to the California State Assembly, which is actually where it originated, as it needs to be looked over again due to heavy amendments through its journey through Senate Transportation Committee and State Senate. Every time the bill has landed on a desk, the approval has been overwhelming.

Still, once the California State Assembly releases the bill, it will make its way to the California Governor’s desk, where it will hopefully be signed and became a law and go into effect. This will give many riders the ability to lane-split, where in California is currently “legal” unless otherwise noted. California is the first state where such bill will became law, and motorcycle advocates are hoping other states follow suit.

What are your thoughts? Is lane-splitting safe or not?
