Riding Tips for Fall

In Monday’s tech tips we started talking about cold weather. It’s an unfortunate fact of life for many of us that snow starts to pile up and riding season ends. In between the warmth of summer and the snows of winter lies fall. I am a huge fan of fall rides with the changes in colors, the invigorating temperatures, and sadly the lack of sun.

Dangers of fall riding.

The primary danger is one of the main reasons for riding in the fall. All of those beautiful leaves fall and land in the most inopportune places. Right at the outer edge of the road in the corners. This isn’t terrible until combined with early morning or evening dew. Then you have the equivalent of ice for traction. Not the most fun ride and depending on the road you are on could either be in the woods or some nice ditch.

What to do?

This is one of easiest safe riding tips I have ever written. Slow down and stay closer to the center of the road. The nice thing about cars is they will clear the center of the road. Making it safer for us on two wheels to ride. The other tip I would give is if you plan on doing a leaf watching ride is leave later in the day. Give the sun some time to dry out those leaves and help make your ride a complete one, from home to destination, and back to home.
