Ok, so how do you know other than when it flies apart if you are over revving the engine since most models don't have a tach?

 

But all models have a rev limiter. It'll shut down a cylinder and you'll just think it blew up.

But it'll protect the motor.

 

If you have a newer Harley with fuel injection then there's an RPM limiter that will cut off the fuel when the bike hits 5500 RPM. 5500 RPM is well below the actual redline.

The fuel will start to flow again when the engine rpm drops below 5500.

It's a pretty abrupt feeling and can be very disconcerting the first time you hit it.

 

Rev Limiter. End of story.

 

Actually, the rev limiter is controlled by the ignition.

 

and the carbed models also have a rev limiter.

My 09 Low Rider hits the rev limiter at 6200 rpm.

 

I don't ride hard at all and doubt I'll ever see the rev limiter but just wondered since there's no tach. I don't plan to lug the engine either and presume it will be apparent if/when that happens and a downshift will solve that.

 

Twin Cam will have oil coming from the air cleaner. Never done it myself but I heard somewhere..........
