Im completely redoing my fxr. I have a set of fxdx forks that im gonna run. My question is how much fluid to put in these after i get them coated? Should i replace all the seals? These are real good shape. Anybody have a how to?

 

I took mine to a sportbike shop to have them rebuilt. Charged 150 for labor. Probably your best bet to have it done right.

 

You'll need some special tools f the FXDX front suspension; I'd recommend to buy the Clymer or Dyna Service Manual at Ebay....

 

I have done Off Road Showas without any special tools, although some say the Harley 39mm Showas require one for dissassembly.

Loosen both the compression and rebound screws, then loosen top cap while still in triple clamps. Remove fork leg from bike and finish removing top cap from fork leg. Now you will have to seperate top cap from damping cartridge so you will need to push the spring down and use something to hold the cartridge from spinning while you use a ratchet and socket to spin top cap off. Then take a small air impact wrench and buzz out the cartridge retainer bolt on the bottom of the fork leg to free the cartridge from the lower.

Of course u still have a few seals to remove and some clips in the seal area to allow disassembly. This is all from what I have read and can see from parts explosions as nobody here seems to have done them on their own.

I have rebuilt prob 15 sets of FXR legs now, we charge $110 to tear them down and rebuild them with fresh seals... YES use fresh seals they actually cost less than the fluid, i like spectro for fork oil but that is just my preference. if you would rather you can send us the legs we will tear them down, coat them, and rebuild them prior to sending them back... we do this all the time for customers/forum members... as far as fluid amount... i would have to check the owners manual for the amount...

 

Joe, The FXR 39mm legs arent the same as the FXDX/T cartridge Showas.

Have you disassembled any of the FXDX fork legs yet?

 

Pretty sure he just made a typo, the red bike above is an FXDXT and those are the Showa cartridge forks.

 

ya sorry about that, those are the Showa cartridge forks... i have done many many sets! in the pic of them not assembled you can see the hole for the lower damper adjustment

 

What's the difference in the FXDX and an FXD. I'm preparing to powdercoat the 39mm sliders on my '04 FXD. My Clymer service manual ($22 on Amazon; Score!) should be here next week. I replaced my 06 Wide Glide sliders, seals, oil, in a few hours with no issues. I'm wondering if there are gotchas in my FXD.

 

What would your rate be to rebuild a set of 39mm FXD and black powdercoat the sliders?
