Default Neutral Safety Switch?

Neutral Safety Switch?

I'm looking at new hand levers and I came across this review:

"...however the clutch lever is missing the tab to activate the neutral safety switch, which in my mind is a safety hazard. In other words, if a person stalls the bike, they cannot just pull the clutch lever to restart, they would have to put the bike in neutral first, start it, then back into gear...."

Is this correct? Hell, I don't even know if my bike has one (2013 Street Bob). I know I can start it while in first at a standstill with the lever in. I was under the impression a neutral safety switch just made you pull in the clutch lever to start the bike while it was in gear and if the clutch lever was not depressed then the bike had to be in neutral. I ALWAYS press the clutch lever down when starting my bike. The little green light has lied to people before...

There's an interlock switch inside the clutch lever that allows you to start the bike in gear. When you pull the lever in it let's the switch complete the ignition circuit. There's another switch like that in the front brake lever for the brake light.

The clutch interlock is overridden when the bike is in neutral.

The tab on the lever pushes the switch to open the circuit when the lever is at rest.

My 2012 FXDC has this feature. Most bikes manufactured after a given year (I dont know what year) have this feature. Some bikes will not crank in gear with the kickstand down.

In neutral, will crank without clutch.

In gear, have to pull the clutch or it will not do nothing.

I wish they all had the kick stand feature.

Will you bike crank in gear without the clutch pulled in?

I haven't tried that one. But my ricer wouldn't start in neutral unless the clutch was in.

My WG has a kick stand feature. Just give her the gas and the kick stand pops right up. Lol
