In anticipation of recieving the rear lowering bolts for my fatboy, I decided to lower the front fender while waiting for the mail man. I removed the fender, put a piece of a rubber hose on top of the tire then placed the fender on top of that. I spent alot of time making sure that there was going to be enough clearance before marking where my new holes were going to be. Then I started drilling.


I used a uni-bit to get the size of hole I needed to just get the bolts through.

I raised the bike then mounted the fender and double checked the clearances making sure nothing was rubbing.

I took it around the neighborhood and everything seems just fine. I just need to cut the excess off and touch up the edges, but I'm going to ride it some more before doing that, in case I find that I have to go back to the stock position, in which case I'll just fill the new holes in and touch it up with black paint. But, so far it looks like it is going to work. Here is a before and after shot...

Looks nice. I almost did the same thing a coupe days ago when I replaced the front rotor and had the wheel off. Looks like about 1/2" or 5/8" difference? I was thinking the plastic hole plugs would work to hide the old mounting holes.

 

The rule of thumb for clearance is usually 5/16 or so. Tape a 5/16" nut to the middle of teh tire and spin it around and see if it scrapes. If not you should be good.

I lowered and chopped mine also. Looks much better sitting closer to the tire.
