I used to have a 1200C and put 10,000 miles on it. Never could get totally rid of the carb cough. Some folks seem to have been able to clear theirs with re-jetting, but I tried a number of jet combonations and never could find the right one. 42/180, 42/185, 45/180, 45/185, 46/180, 46/185, none of these would totaly clear the cough on my bike. It actaully ran the best with the 45/185 combo.

I bought the jets off Ebay, there are usually several folks selling jet kits on there for less than $20.00.

My wife used tohave an '03 883C that sounded like yours. It was stock and set up pretty lean from the factory.
Is yours still stock? If it is ,may be time for air cleaner, mufflers andrejet to make it run.

well i just put a 48 jet in,,removed the adjusting plug,,left the main
jet in it,,took the 42 factory jet out,,adjusted the lean screw out
two 21/2 turns out,,took about all the spit,,but still did it a coulple time,,but it runs better,,with the higher low-jet,,i will mess with it tommorow,,good thing no gas leaks,,LOL,,and it does run better
i think,,
