Default bad compensator?

How do I know if my compensator sprocket is junk by physically looking at it? I took the sprocket off the crank and the springs seem fine (hard to tell) that are on the rotor. The only wear I see is on the "peaks" of the sliding cam and on the inside of the compensating sprocket where it rides on the shaft extension. Overall it doesn't look to bad but she bangs occasionally on start up and there seems to be excessive driveline lash along with notchy shifting. Bike is a 2007 StreetGlide with 42.5k on the odo.

I had the starter bang quite often on my 2007 rk. I put on the se compensator and no more issues. My original comp looked fine. They just suck I guess. The change was really easy to do.

Had an 07 SG that would crank fine cold.... as soon as it got hot... spin, clank, bang, grind, whirl, bang.....
Put the SE Compensator on it... never had any more trouble.......... the old one looked ok, like you were saying.... the design just isn't strong enough for a big twin.

With 47K it's a Smart move, on my 08 the first compensator went out at 35K. The second at 60K had a SE put on then as the first time they would not under warranty , they wised up and installed the SE the second time. Traded it in at 97K with no more problems.

Well, I got it all back together and the new SE Compensator works 100% better than the old one. Starts better (hot and cold), the excessive driveline lash is minimal, and the bike seems to shift gears better. Overall it was an easy job to do and I recommend this mod for anybody that is thinking about doing it.
