Default 1981 XLH "limited Edition Series One"??

I recently purchased a 1981 XLH series one. On the tanks it says number 651 of 1000. I read that in 1981 Harley bought the company back from AMF. In celebration they created a “series one XLH” and numbered only 1000 of them. I am wondering if all 1000 of these bikes were painted the same color and if mine has the original paint. Any other clarification and significance of this “series one” would be greatly appreciated.

Im no expert (far from it) but the story you tell i have read before.
the bikes quite rare i think.
Please dont "bob it" chop it or any other such rubbish.
my only concern is it looks as though that decal is in too good condition for year.
Has it been re-sprayed or kept in a museum.
you are a lucky man

Well the frame on the bike doesnt have a spot of rust on it anywhere so I am guessing it was kept inside most of it's life. It shows to have 21K miles on it. I hope someone chimes in and has some good info on the series ones.

I'm a member of that forum too, and for one reason or another, activity on that site seems very hit and miss.

Default Update

I called HD a couple of days ago and asked them about the bike. They requested pictures which I sent them yesterday. They called me back this morning and said that the “Series One LD” consisted of a paint set. All 1000 bikes had the same paint set. They said mine looks original and they are pretty rare these days. So now Im wondering do I get new skins and continue to drive the bike? Do I just store it for another twenty years? Do I try and sell it and get something else to ride? If I re-skin the bike and drive it I take the risk of the motor going south or something else. So what would yall do?

it was built to be ridden, ride it! Nobody gets to enjoy it by storing it. Ride the wheels off, take it to plenty of shows, group rides, poker runs etc so the whole community gets to see it and enjoy it.
