Just reached 500 miles and I was going to change my own oils as I have always have done.
I noticed that I had 4 quarts of Castrol Power RS V-Twin 20w-50 and
3 quarts of Valvoline 4tstroke motorcycle oil 20w-50 laying around in my work shed. Both are Full Synthetic.

Question... seeing how I got this oil, I don't want to waste it. Can I use it in my 2014 Street Glide 103? Can I use it in the transmission and the primary? Would one brand be better in the tranny vs. the primary vs motor?

At the next 500 mile service, I planned on getting Redline motor, tranny, and gear oil. But for now, I just cant see spending the bucks.

 

my rule is any motor oil in the motor,gearlube in the gearbox,and anything that says v twin in primary,v twin doesn't have additives that will lead to clutch slip.

Yes, by all means.

 

Go for it, it won't hurt a thing but if your going to change it again at 1000 service I'd just use a cheap dino

What I've learned:

....and on the record, I hate "branded" oils as a rule, from Polaris snowmobile to HD brand....

Harley Formula + is the best I've found in the primary.... ESPECIALLY if you have a hydraulic clutch. And I've run everything. Drag Specialties primary fluid isn't bad, but tough to find.

In the engine I prefer Amsoil 20w50 VTwin, and in the trans I run Amsoil Severe Gear 75-110

 

I wouldn't do that, and here's my reasoning:

You never empty all of the oil during a service. There is still 8-12 ounces of fluid left in the engine after you drain it, roughly 8 ounces in the primary, and about the same in the transmission.

Switching to a product that is closer to what you are going to run on a permanent basis will start thinning the old stuff out sooner.



Would it hurt to go cheap dino? Nah, not a bit.

 

Just wondering why the change at 500 miles.The MOCO recommends first service at 1000.
