Default 1957 Sportster ..common or rare?

I know someone who has a 1957 Sportster. He asked if Iwould find out if it's valuable?

I emailed Jay Leno's garage and asked ...any interest? That was over a month ago...no response.

I telephoned HD USA. They asked for a photo of the bike and the serial #. The man I spoke to, said he would send the infoto the archives department. I asked if they would send me some information one way or the other..ie: value to a collector..rare or common.)
That was over a month ago...no response!

What do you think?
Is a '57 Sportster a 'find' or no interest / common?

here is a scan of an old photo he had..( the model is probably 60 now)

Depends on the condition of the bike, but I would say YES it's valuable, since it's the first year XL Sportster!

They display Elvis's 57 Sporster in the Art Of Motorcycles.

Condition, condition, condition - these arethree major criteria. Of course, the more time that goes by, the more valuable it becomes in any form.My wifehad an uncle who made a "fortune" on a 1913(?) Pope motorcycle that he bought as a basket case at a flea market in 1947. He thought he remembered paying $7.00 for it and he sold it in the 1970's for $3,200.00 - unchanged by him from when he bought it.

Today, the value of a 1957 XL would depend highly on its condition.

thanks for the comments.

Besides Jay Leno's Garage and HD USA.. is there another place I could inquire re. the value of this '57 Sportster? (I know condition is important)
Maybe an auction company that sells bikes or cars?
Anybody know of another place I could contact?

I appreciate the comments I'm getting...thanks.

You can try the National Motorcycle Museum which is owned by the guy who owns J & P Cycles. They are located in Iowa.

Let me dig around a bit and see if still I have Bill Rodental's Business card. He is one of the motorcycle restorers who work for the HD archives. I'm sure he's busy but never too busy to answer any question I have for him...
