Default Axle Sizes?

Hi Guys,
I've been trying to get a definitive answer as to when and on which models Harley increased the axle size from 3/4" to 1". I keep getting different answers so I thought someone here might know for sure. I make a wheel balancer for Harleys and this question constantly comes up.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Marc

The FL for sure was Timkin Taperes, 2" front rotor sholder till & thru 1999. 2000 & 2001 2.23" & 3/4" axle. 2002 thru 2007 = 1". 2008 = 25mm (-0.0016" off of a 1" axle), Check this out for photos relating to another HDForums member.

Thank you very much for the info. I'm a bit confused about the thru 1999 specs. I'm not sure what a rotor sholder is. Was the axle 2" in diameter during those years? My balancer cones support the wheel via the bearings so what I'm really looking for is the bearing inner race ID which should be slightly larger than the axle so knowing the axle size is fine. The 2000 & 2001 I read to be a 3/4" axle but what does the 2.23" represent? The OD of the bearing? I read the 2002 through 2008 to ne 1". Any clarification is really appreciated.

Thanks,
Marc

Thank you for the explanation. One last spec to clear up is the up to 1999 axle size. Is it 2" or something different? Do these specs apply to all the Harleys including the Sportster?

Thanks again,
Marc

Axles are 3/4", 25mm & 1" only on HD's. The rotor shoulder is the 2" <= 1999 or 2.23". =>2000 including 08

Thank you, Howard. I'm assuming when you say only HD's you're excluding Sportsters. Is that right?

I think I answered my own question. You mean all Harleys have either 3/4", 1" or 25mm axles which should include Sportster and V-Rod.

That's great! I'll update my website with this info. Thanks again for the help
