Does Harley have a flat rate manuel??
I'm just curious if Harley has a flat rate manuel like the auto industry has for doing repairs.
It seems likethere is a lot of variation from one dealer to another as to what a job costs to do.
I've been to more than one shop that acts like they are pulling the quote out of there ***!!

Yes and no. They have a time code manual that says how much time something "should" take, but then the hourly labor rates differ from shop to shop. Also the manual that states how long things take doesn't always take into account any modifications that might add time to something, etc. like if it takes more time to remove a specialty air cleaner as opposed to the stock or SE or something like that.

Dawg is correct and some of the more inexperienced techs may not be on flat rate and you may be paying actual time which may be longer than required. You must understand that dealers are independent buisness people and HD (MOCO) cannot dictate how they run their show. That is why for example that bike prices vary and set-up fees and doc fees vary. Freight though it may vary should never vary.

Things you should take into consideration when you get a labor quote is what I call "overlapping labor" example: when you're having a set of wheels and tires installed,be sure they're only charging you for installing the wheels as mounting and balancing the tires would be included in that price in the flat rate manual.
When you get a quote on having a job done,get a copy of the quote so you know haw many hours they're charging you and call around....shop and compair.
We go by the flat rate manual religiously,if the tech can't do the job in the amount of time the manual gives, it his fault not yours. our techs get paid by the flat rare manual.

The time codes are only used to do warranty work - the times are usually overly optimistic and the techs hate warranty work since the warranty work usually takes longer than what they get paid for. Of course, that gets "made up" when someone comes in for a major service. It gets quoted at, say 3.23 hours, and, a good tech can get it done in less than 2. Any work that's not warranty work or flat rate such as regular service is done by the hour, usually in quarter hour increments. I see people complaining about this structure all the time (stealers) when they'll gladly take their Fords, Chevys, Hondas and Toyotas to those dealers who do exactly the same thing. I dare say that there are just as many good vs bad car dealerships out there as HD shops - if you have any mechanical ability at all, do your own work. There's a big difference when you're not looking at the clock and trying to make next month's mortgage payment by relying on how fast you can knock out a service job.
