have you ever used a gas additive to clean an old engine? What did you use and how did it work for you?


I completely cleaned out my 1988 sporty with seafoam, I run it regularly.

I also mixed the whole can with a full tank of gas in my 1993 ford escort wagon 1.9L 4 cyl, MAN what a difference it made, it used to shudder at every RPM and had NO *****, now it runs great!! it has 860,000 miles

I suggested it to my friend who has a 1999 VW passat, 1.8L turbo, he has 57,000 miles and he noticed right away it freed up the engine.

i myself have a 03 infinity G35, but its too new to need it. In my experience seafoam is MOSTLY for 100,000 mile or older engines. unless your running extremely rich or have alot of premature buildup


anyways what are your guys experiences?, and don't let it turn into a oil thread, we dont HAVE to use this stuff, its just sharing interesting experiences using different brands.

 

i used seafoam too. it knocked the compression down to 65ish on all four cylinders. total loss.

 

Where do you get seafoam anyways? I've never seen it.

I use a tank of Seafoam about every 4-5K miles just as cheap insurance. I have found however, that if you stay away from cheap (off brand) gas, it's probably unnecessary in most situations. Name brand fuels all contain fuel system cleaner additives that work well to keep the fuel system clean. Chevron with Techron is one example.

I have read other reports from people that can only get E-10 gas that Seafoam does really help. Fortunately, we are not forced to buy that Ethanol crude here yet.

As to Seafoam causing a loss of compression, the only thing I can imagine is that the engine was already just being held together with crud.

 

860k on a Ford Escort? The must be one in a million. That's an average of 1100 miles a week for the life of the car.

 

I've only used LHP in my bike here and there when I remember to put it in the tank. I've never used seafoam, mystery oil or the like in any of my cars.
I'm a former auto tech/manager of a shop. In the cage I use a 3 step fuel system cleaner (the same stuff the shops charge $80-$100 to use in your car). My cost on it is $11.00 and it works well.
It comes with a bottle to dump in the tank, a can of carb/throttle body cleaner and another bottle that you insert a hose with a on/off valve and hook the other end to a vacuum port on the intake manifold.
it is made my a company called "Pen Ray" and is NOT sold at autozone. You may be able to find it at your local napa or car quest. I get it from the local Federated auto parts store.
I've used it on my '93 ranger since day one and at 73000 original miles I haven't had any issues with oil burning or power loss.

 

I have used seafoam in many old boat motors and the results are dramatic. I did kill one motor however that was being held together with crud......cleaned out the crud and it fell apart.

I also use it in old lawnmower engines and they run like new.....

 

some carbon deposits are necessary in older engines

 

yea it does sound strange. the owner before me put around 50-100 miles a day on it, idk how he found the time haha.
