Default Starter relay wiring

I have a question on the wiring on the starter relay(the one under the battery tray).I have a 74 FXE. I have tried looking at my service manual and searching this forum and the internet, with no luck. The relay has 3 terminal posts. Two large and one small.
I was going to wire it..wire from handlebarswitch to the small post..wire from battery to one large post..wire from large post to solienod. Is that correct or am I asking for another smoking part??
Any and all advice is apperciated. Thanks in advance.

Handlebar switch to terminal #3, which should be the small one. Do not run a wire from the battery to the relay without fusing it, or using a circuit breaker. IIRC, the original wiring was battery - circuit breaker - bat terminal on voltage regulator - terminal #1 on starter relay. Terminal #2 on relay goes to small terminal on solenoid.

Thanks for the response.I did forget to mention the circuit breaker.
With that info I should be able to button things upand maybe...get her back out on the road.
Being mechanically challanged(but learning fast!!).Trying to replace/repair someones quick fixes sure gives a guy a headache. Thanks to everyone on this forum....real helpful advice.

Shouldn't their be the smaller bosh type relay wired in the system ?
first to the bosh type relay then to the larger starter relay?

Nope, only one relay. They used several different types over the years. Some were physically bigger than others. Unless you're confusing the starter solenoid as a relay?

"S" is to the solenoid. "I" goes to ignition on some autos. Your relay can be used on different vehicles. Put tape or something over the I terminal. Don't use it.

Battery positive goes to one large post (either one). Other large post goes to the large post on the solenoid. (The one above the other large post that goes to the starter).
