Default Engine Temperatures - What is too Hot?

I have seen posts regarding engine temps - i.e. through a rejett, the motor runs richer and now it runs cooler also.&nbsp\\; Define that.&nbsp\\; Is it a simple observation that there seems to be less heat being thrown off the motor or is it from temp readings on the cylinders?&nbsp\\; Or is it judged by engine oil temperature? (through a dipstick temp gauge?)

Default RE: Engine Temperatures - What is too Hot?

I have a oil temp dipstick the guys I ride with say any thing under 220 is fine, but I don't no for sure. Today in stop and go in Lansing Mi, my oil temp hit 205 but most of the day it was around 180-190. Kind of hot out today, it was around 95, thats hot out for this time of year in Michigan, but it's been a cool spring.
Any one know what temp really is to hot for oil or the motor ?

I don't have an oil temp thermometer. In stop and go traffic in Knoxville last summer when the air temp was at 100, you could just tell the engine was cooking. I'm amazed at how the engine manages to operate in day to day situations by just using air for cooling.

Oil temps are and indirect measure of cylinder head temps.......it's head temps you gotta worry about.
&nbsp\\;
Best way to measure head temp is with an infrared gun shot directly at base of sparkplug.....285 is max desired temp

&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;I have a thunder max efi on my bike and the engine temp warning light is set to go off at 350 deg.
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;Full synthetic oils handle high temps better as well. I have been using mobil1 v-twin 20/50. I just read the other day in the service manual that in temps over 85 a straight 60w is recommended, I just ordered some Klotz 60w synthetic.

I had an ultralight with a two-cylinder air-cooled engine. Cylinder head temps (on both cylinders) was part of the instrumentation and something we watched. You mention 285 being the max for our HD engines. There must be a considerable difference between front and rear. Wonder if you could point me to more info on this? Thanks.

I use the oil temp dip stick. The hottest I have ever seen it was riding through Death Valley when the ambient was around 115 degrees and the oil temp was like 225. This isn't bad when I consider the BT's that were with me were pushing 260 by the time we got to Furnace Creek.

When I was running Dino oil, I saw my oil temp as high as 265. Never that high since I switched to Sny Oil. No where near that high.
