I have a 2002 FLHTC inwhich I think the neck bearing need tightened up. How hard of a job is this. Anybody have any tips. I understand there is sort of a star nut that you have to tighten using a homemade tool.

 

If it's like mine, you pull the radio out, beat down the lock tab, loosen the big nut (not the nut behind the handlebars, the nut in front of the handlebars), get in at the side with a small punch or little screwdriver and tighten it up until it passes the swing test, then tighten the top nut (the nut in front of the handlebars), and bend the lock tab back.

 

That beat statement can give a person the wrong impression.. I had a washing machine go bad one time and I bought a manual for it and they told me in order to service it i had to cut the lower pulley off with a hack saw ????? I just bought a new one

Take the bike to a qualified mechanic. Neck bearings that are too loose OR too tight are dangerous.

 

+1, some jobs just plain suck and to me this is one of them I pass on.
