Default Questions on becoming an H-D salesman

I just found out monday that the factory iv'e worked at for 27 years is closing up for good.
I'm 45, and i figure this is a good chance to do what i really want to with my life.
I've had a life long passion for motorcycles, and i'd really like to become a Harley salesman in a dealership. Ive never sold anything in my life, but i feel my knowlege of bikes , and my love of Harley's ( I ride an '06 Heritage Classic ). would be a big plus, since as most of us have experienced, alot of salesman are clueless. Do most dealerships pay on a commision basis, or straight salary ? any idea what the average yearly wage is ?
and input from any H-D salesman, or otherwise out there would be greatly appreciated

From what I've seen at my dealership, you will never have time to ride your own motorcycle because you'll be working all the time.

I agree with what was said! Do you like to move bikes around all day? If you really know Harley's it would be a good thing if you do? I have asked sales people in many dealers and the after market industry....80% of them don't no SHI* along with the parts guy's, they will try anything to sell you something...ask a parts person how many ounces a Primary takes and you will get about three Different answers, every time you walk in the door...20% know there stuff!....IMO

Ditto....mikeisglidn! If you become a salesman, the sales floor is your only daily salvation.. Been there done that!!
Take your knowledge of bikes and look for something that will value your talent on those bikes. Good Luck on your search!

I used to love to work on cars as a hobby in the late 70's. Then I decided I wanted to be a mechanic and tried turning wrenches for a living. Now I can hardly stand to touch a car anymore.

I have to agree with Atrox...

I used to love working on computers and electronics... 14 years later in Computer Customer Support.... If I never saw another computer I would be a happy man.

Lets face it... No one wants to work... it would be nice to have a job that is awesome and we look forward to going to every day but that is not the normal occurance.

Keep the things you like/love and work seperate in my opinion...

Although if someone would pay me to bow hunt all day... I may be able to do that. But then again... I normally fall asleep while sitting in my hunting blind. =) So basically I want someone to pay me to sleep.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
