Will this Speedometer from a 2007 Sportster 883 fit on a 1995 Sportster 883 and just plug into the wiring harness?

It is a 1995 883 XLH. It has a 12 pin plug right about where the Speedo and idiot lights would plug in so I believe it is an electronic speedo not mechanical.

 

My 1995 XLH883 Hugger gets the speed signal on another connector separate from the main 12-pin harness - it is a 3-pin connector that goes into the 12-pin connector on the back of the gauge. If you're already wired up and just need a gauge, you might be ok with this - if the gauge connector is the same.

I don't know what connector is on the back of that speedometer on e-bay. In 2007 the big bikes made a move to a new connector on the back - I don't know anything about the 2007 Sportster, but maybe it still uses the same style connector as our older bikes? See if you can get a picture of the back of the gauge out of the bracket to check that connector.

There is one more issue that deals with the function of the speedometer (usually for speedometers after 2005 in the big twins, no idea if/when for a Sportster) and the turn-signal canceler (on a 1995 bike) and other vehicle speed-sensor dependent systems (if any). For you, the auto-canceler may or may not work, but I have no idea what the case will be.

Nope, will defo not work. The plug and wiring harness look the same but the voltage is different, and more recent bikes (after 2004 ?) are all multiplexed for the onboard computer etc. so the electronics won't talk to each other.

 

OK, I couldn't remember when HD made the switch from the cable run speedo to the electronic speedo....I know the one speedo I posted said 'xx year to '94. Well, here's a mini speedo that should work. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...4506.m20.l1116

have you tried googling or ebaying the HD reference for the part number ?

When I was looking for a replacement speedo for my '01 model it helped me a lot :
1. I learned a lot on dfferent speedo models
2. I found a number of guys who eventually sourced a used model for me.

Actually, now I mention it : I have a speedo downstairs : ref. 67290-98B : in miles with kms as a second unit. circa 13600 on the clock if you are interested ... postage would be about 16€ (22 bux). PM me if you want to discuss pricing

 

I think I found the correct speedometer. I have one in my posession.

The label on back says:

PPN 67016-95.
FPN P20068B
DOM (Date of Manufacture?) XL883.
Cal: Cathy C.
Date: 9-07-94

My interpretation is:

Part No 67016-95
for XL888
Made 9-07-94

The date of manufacuture of my Sportster on the neck is 12-94. So it stands to reason that a speedometer with the part no ending in "-95" made on September 7, 1994 for an XL883 would be the correct one for a model year 1995 883 XLH made in December 1994.

The only problem is that the wiring coming off this speedometer doesn't match the wiring on the bike. I need a 1995 Sportster 883 wiring diagram. I have ordered a service and parts manual but probalby won't have it for a week or so. If someone has a pdf of the wiring diagram they can send me I would appreciate it.

 

Do you still have your original speedo ? If so, the PN on there is the only one you will get to work on your bike. You can disredard the part of the code after the dash, so in your case :

67016-95x = part number 67016, manufactured in 1995, part revision number x.

Basically what you need is to source a part beginning in 67016 and don't worry about the end bit.

However ... I have been led to believe that HD dealers are not allowed to reprogram digital speedos to read your real mileage. You are left with 2 options :

1. get a speedo NEW in which case you can have it programmed (normally at no extra cost) by HD before it ships out to you, or
2. Find someone qho has the kit to reprogram a speedo without frying it.

Only if you are very lucky will you find a speedo with approx. the right mileage on it and not have to worry about reprogramming.

If the wiring on the speedo doesn't match what you have on the bike, steer clear. Ther odds are you will never get it to work without a major headache.
