It's no problem getting in there! You may need a little talent balancing things at the tips of your fingers especially putting the nuts back on, but that the toughest of it all.
You should be fine. I removed my plate bracket to do the laydown mod with the bike sitting on the kickstand and I have 11" shocks. It was a little annoying but still not worth getting the 79 sporty I'm rebuilding off the bike jack. One word of advice, though, would be to get some latex gloves and wear long sleeves. You'll be amazed how dirty it is up in there. I'm not afraid of a little dirt, it would just save you the trouble of having to clean a bunch of grimy fingerprints off the fender when ur done.
It can be done. If you have a problem getting under there fab up a wire coat hanger with some duct tape or gorilla tape wrapped sticky side out around it. Stick the nut or bolt on there and go fishn'. I had to do this to get my seat mount nut/clip combo back on after changing seats. Just watch not to scrath the paint.
If you have a jack make life easier and jack it up prop up the wheel and remove 2 of the shock bolts. wheel will move down to give you much more clearance and you wont have to worry about alignment or belt tightness once you are done.
