Manual is on order so I can't look, but which Torx Plus bits will I need for the SG? I know I need the T-27, but what others?

Why not do this.. Go to sears and just buy the whole set of torx screwdrivers and also get the 3/8 drive socket style and the you should be set... Of course I say that but im a tool freak and ive got 10k worth of tools just for building street rods and thats just whats in my tool chest.. I have found that a bit set and the adapters to mate them to a 1/4 inch drive ratchet is also a plus too... ok now having said that I cant remember actually what sizes you need.. Remember most autos use a lot of torx stuff too..

 

+1 on n8dc's reply. Get an entire set of high quality torx bits. The cheesy Harbor Freight or other Chinese ones may be good once or twice, but all you need to do is strip out a single derby cover torx screw and you'll kick yourself for going really cheap. A set of Craftsman or like quality will last you a lifetime and if they ever strip (how'd that happen? ) they'll replace it free.

 

Yes, that does seem reasonable, but like you, I already have a couple sets of "Torx" bits. There are so few reqirements for "Torx Plus" that I don't want to triplicate all the sizes. Its a pain that harley uses the "Plus" bits. I'm still considering the idea of replacing the Torx bolts with Allen bolts. At least the Primary cover anyways.

From my experience a Torx Plus bit is used when the bolt head is worn and say a #20 is slipping you use a #20+.

 

I replaced all of the Torx fasteners on my Superglide with chrome allen head bolts, they not only look better, but they are much easier to work with and don't need 3 or 4 sets of bits, one set is all you need. If you're going to replace them, allen heads are the way to go.

If you buy a set make sure it includes a T27. I've found that not all do. I bought a few extra T27s which I think is the most common because when they wear it causing slipping which causes shearing of the bolt head.

The ones HD uses that I can think of right now are; T25,T27 & T40. The master cylinder cover uses a real small one but can't remember the size.

I have changed most of mine to stainless steel allen head bolts. A much better design for a fastener IMHO.

 

the smaller ones are T15 and T20's ,,,,i think anyway ,,,i remember using them on the bike for something ,,,,,maybe it was the grip housings ,,, cant recall......

 

+1 on changing from Torx to Allen bolt head! One less set of tools to deal with too in your saddle bag kits!
