Coil test?
Hey ya'll
My 1995 Sportster Deluxe 883 has a starting problem. It spins over with no problems, but refuses to start (I killed the battery twice, to no avail) I pulled the plugs and found the previous owner used the wrong plugs (NGK R DPR7EA) so I went out and picked up a set of NGK DCPR7EIX and gapped them to .040. Still no joy. I pulled the plugs and they were wet, and I could smell gas when trying to start. I'm figuring my issue is spark. I found the coil test, elsewhere on the site, so I followed the instructions, and this is what I got.
Accross the two smaller bolts at the top of the coil meter set to 20k 0.01
Across the two plug wire leads meter set at 20k 9.99
Am I correct in assuming the coil is done? did I do the test correctly? I checked the 4 fuses located under the seat, and they all pan out fine. Is there something I'm missing? All help is appreciated, as I'm extremely p***ed my hog ain't runnin.

Place a test light across the wires to the coil.Crank the engine and see if it flashes.If it doesn't the problem is in another area.If it does flash trying a coil would be a good plan.You can also pull a plug and put in in the plug wire.Lay the wire on the engine and crank it over to see if you do have spark.Since it is flooded I would put one of the old plugs in the engine before trying.You can also see if the coil can fire by seeing which side is hot with the key on.Disconnect the small wires to find out.Attatch the wires again and with a plug in the plug wire ground the side that wasn't hot.Don't hold it there just do it quick and look for a spark at the plug.If you can make the coil fire it is good.I will say a coil can fire a plug during this test and still not fire a plug under compression.

Thank you for the offer. I am going to try one more test. I'm going to put a plug to the wire, lay it on the head, and spin it over, just to see if there is a spark or not. Does anyone know where the fuses are on this bike? Are they under the seat? Or is that box under the left side cover a fuse pannel. It didn't look like it opened, but I didn't have much of a chance to inspect it. 3 year olds don't wait long after they say "I have to pee" so I got side tracked.
