I'm not big on knowledge of cubic inches on engines and kinda confused on the defference in 95 and 96 I here some people talking about.
Please I know its 1 cubic inch difference,Whats the purpose in them being so close and so on.Someone want to help me out here.Thanks

 

The 95 is an older stock 88 ci engine that's been bored out to 95 ci. They replace the cylinders and pistons to effect the change.

The 96 is Harleys upgrade of the older 88 ci engine. They changed the stroke in this case in increase the engine displacement. The 88 and 96 engines both have the same pistons size, it's just the stroke that makes the difference. You can also apply the cylinder and piston swap that was used to take the 88 to 95 ci on the stock 96 engine to increase it's displacement to 103 ci.

 

95 is 1550, 96 is 1584 It's in the stroke

mountain man, the original size of the two were 88 cu in. and 96cu in. the 88 cu in was 3-3/4" bore with 4" stroke. in 07 i believe for the touring and 06 for the dyna harleys they went to a longer stroke of 4-3/8" stroking the basic same engine by 3/8" more stroke, known as a stroked motor. so there ya go, the 88 when bored to 3-7/8" is a 95 inch motor. the newer stroked version stock is 96". and when the 96" stock motor is bored from 3-3/4" to 3-7/8" it becomes a 103". hope this helped to simplify it for you.

logic says the 95 will rev higher than the 96 and make its power higher in the rev range, whereas the 96 would make more torque lower in the rev range and not rev as high. Of course there arent many 95s with the stock cam or heads so the waters are muddied further...

 

The difference is always what makes it all work.Comparing apples to apples there should be almost no difference in the 2 motors.Again you can also build two motors identically and they will still be a little different.It's the nature of the beast.

 

What do I have to do to my 96 to beat my friends 95 in a straight line test?

 

Cams, compression, and headwork will work.
