I'm going to do an inspection of the cam adjusters Sunday am. and I'm hoping someone will answer these small q's for me.

Straight up or on the kickstand?

How much fluid mess for either way?

Top it off or change the oil out?

I'm changing my current Mobile 1, 20-50W, which is 'Fugly-black' after only 3000 miles. I'll cut open the filter for a check of red!

Really it is FUGLY TO THE MAX.

1...dont matter, whatever you prefer
2...should only be a few ounces in there

Be clean and change the oil shortly after the install.

 

Here's how I did my checks:
Drained the oil
Removed oil filter
Opened up the oil filter to check for pieces of ORANGE
If lots of orange was found, removed cam cover, you will have to remove the front hedder pipe.
Use flashlight and inspection mirror (a dental mirror will work) to check the rear follower
Front follower is easy to see.
If lots of orange or chunks of orange were found, GO TO DEALER or INDY ASAP and SHOW THEM WHAT YOU FOUND (a good shop will let you know if it is safe to ride). While you are there you will need a new exhaust and cam cover gasket. If they tell you bring it in, DO IT!!!!
If told it's ok to ride, go back home, put new gaskets, oil and filter on. Go for ride.

 

The cam case has approximately 1/2 quart of oil in it. So straight up and you'll need to deal with the oil. Jiffy stand - and ok, you'll have to deal with a bit less oil.

Its only oil.

How many miles on your ride? I checked mine right at 30k and my outer one was down 50%. The inner one (the hard one to see) only had 20% left. Went ahead and changed it over to hydraulic ones.

 

No need to change the oil at the same time you do the tensioner inspection. You will lose less oil if you leave the bike on the stand, since the cam plate side will be higher. You will lose only a few ounces that way. Just top it off, any oil is going to looker much darker at 3k miles.
