points conversion
im thinking about doing a points conversion, converting my elec. ign. to points. i have a 1990 fxstc. two people i know have both had problems with the elec. ign, one stock ign, 1990 fxstc and another with a crane hi4. is it worth the worry or, and i can, carry an extra pickup in my tool bag.

RE: points conversion
hotrod351. Points and condenser ignitions had their own set of problems. Pitting, burning, oil on points, gap closing up, not to mention points bouncing at high rpms. Then there is the condenser that would just quit when you were out in the middle of nowhere. You may know of 2 people who have had problems with electronic ignitions but there are thousands of bikes on the road with that set up who have never had a problem. My advice would be to stick with what you got and dont worry about it.......................BG

I've had 6 Japanese cycles & this 87 fxr is my 10th Harley. I'm changing my 87 fxr over to points. With the ele - ign, it'l start, idle - run not to good until it warms up a lil. Then aft I ride 2 - 3 blocks & or 2 - 3 or so miles, something clicks & it's take hold & go as if I gave it some nitro to burn. The voes works, so there must be something wrong with the ele in the cone or the black box is going bad. I put points in 78 fxe 2 yr's ago & I checked it this spring. It had a lil pit & with fine sa - paper it cleaned right up. The point gap with the timing, it would start & go just as good as the later eveo's, even with the k - start. NO probs with the points burning, misfiring, oil or water etc. I wanted a bike that rode a lil better & with some more get up & go, so I got this 87 fxr.
