is this right for hd synthetic? should i bring my own oil? auto zone has mobile 1 v twin synthetic for $9.88.

 

15K is only an oil change seems like they are taking advantage of you. 60.00 for a manual and you can do all your own service and be sure it was done properly.

I started out new to harleys three years ago and had read about how much the oil changes were so bought manual and had to invest in some tools. Now it's just like changing oil in a car. Figure with all the tools I bought that between the SG and the Dyna I'm a few hundred ahead now. Harley oil changes are kinda high on average. Service intervals include alot of things that just have to be checked but not serviced thus alot of labor costs. My advice would be to get the manual, buy oil at Autozone (like I do), and order filters a few at a time from Chicago Harley (20% discount)and keep them on hand.

 

Yea do it yourself if you can. They are probably doing more than an oil change for that money. H/D labor is expensive. They have to make a living too.

 

There's not a whole Lot to do to these newer bikes. I think the dealers gives them a lot of fresh air treatment and then charge you $75.00 a hr. for it.

 

If your paying for an oil change only, that's a lot of money. Here are two realities: one, syn 3 is not the best oil you can be using. Especially in the tranny. Second, unless your dealer is a rip off, they are checking your bike stemm to stern, adjusting, lube, and align as needed.

 

Yes, thats a lot of money if you rode that lets say in 1 or 2 riding seasons. I was po'd at dealer after 5,000 service seeing all that was NOT done and started doing it myself. J&S Jack, torque wrenchs, and few other tools and a Service Manual. Will be servicing my bike next week for 20,000 service. I've already paid my jack & tools off the last 4 services (plus pulling both wheels for new tires) I did myself. It's not that hard, and ya get to know your bike better. Those $300+ services start to add up if you ride a lot.

 

Get a manual. It's easy.
You can change all three holes (which is not required at this time, just making a point) with redline power pack 79.99, chrome filter 11.00, derby cover gasket 8.00, o-rings 3.00, can of brake cleaner to clean up oil 2.50. Tools are very basic. Use the soda bottle cut in half trick from this site to keep the oil from the filter from getting all over your bike. Takes about 30 min of your time. Take another 30 min to check belt tension and fasteners.
No oil change should ever cost more than $110.00 and this is on the high end.

Not faulting the dealer. They have to make money to pay their overhead.

 

Yes get a munuel and do it yourself. I also use Mobil1 syn in all three and it was a ton of a lot cheaper then taking to the dealer. Besides you get to know your bike better and how it works.

 

I will do the oil changes for you for half that!
