Default Clutch hub nut removal

Hi Everybody,

What is the easiest way to remove a clutch hub nut? Keep in mind I don't have the locking tool that is shown in the repair manual. Is a impact gun a no no?

Impact is the way I go. Remember it's left handed thread.

Best to check this out. I do not have a lot of experience in there, been into it only one time. But i think that it is a normal thread.

What i did was jam a piece of 1/8" flat steel about 1" wide by about 4" [more or less] long between the two sprockets. Then a 1/2" drive socket with a 4' long pipe as an extension, and it came off quite easily.

I don't have manuals at hand but some years were normal some were reversed. Parts book should have it noted.

This thread and the links in it should help.

It was normal threads and I got it off with the impact. I tried the pipe and breaking bar but I couldn't keep the sprocket from turning.
Thanks for the help.

I know this is an old thread, but for the sake of clarity, both nuts on the Gearbox main shaft that the clutch runs on are left hand thread. Clockwise to undo.

The nut that holds the clutch basket assembly and the front pulley nut with the retaining plate are not normal threads.

The above statements are both wrong!!!

On the IronHead engine all shafts, nuts and bolts are normal threads. There are no "left hand threads" on any shafts, nuts or bolts in this engine.

On the other hand, in the pinion gear and shaft assembly in the electric starter system, the shaft and the corresponding nut have a left hand thread. See page 4-22 of 99484-78 and 5-7 of 99484-85.

Thank you for the opportunity to once again clear up this misconception.
