Well this happens every time an upgrade is mentioned. Everyone starts saying what a pile of crap the HD kit is. I was in the exact same boat as you are last year at this time after a fully loaded trip to the Smokies. I ride with my old man who rides a new Goldwing and in the mountains the 96 just wasn't cutting it even with my fuel moto setup which by the way I believe to be the best performance/dollar upgrade you can make to a stock bike. Anyway I went back and forth about what to do. After talking to a very reputable dealer in my area that has several very good techs we struck a deal. This package does not have the oh and ah numbers that you will get with a Head Quarters kit which is an great kit for all out performance but I was able to do this alot cheaper than a Head Quarters kit to since I would not feel confident enought to install a head quarters kit by myself. I went with the SE 103 kit with SE 255 cams. I used SE adjustible push rods (in case I wanna do cam swap later), SEST Tuner, and a D&D FAt Cat with Ghost Pipe. The shop did the complete install and dyno then gave me a one year unlimited mile warranty. I got 89 HP and 101 TQ. I bike is completely different and runs great. This year I had no problem in the mountatins my old man even commented how well the bike ran. Also just to let you know I did not have compression releses installed and have had zero problems with hot starts even running in the mountains in 90 degree heat. I think this has alot to do with getting the bike tuned properly with the SEST but not sure. As far as price goes I had all this done for $2900 and that included $1100 for the D&D with ghost pipe. So the build itself with tune only set me back $1800 which in money well spent in my book.
