What is the best cam for my FLHTC?
I own a ’07 FLHTCU that was upgraded to the stage II 103 ci (80hp & 103tq with 255 cams, Rinehart true-duals w/quiet baffles, & SERT) not long after I bought it. I've been told by several people I should have better hp & tq numbers with this build. Also, I’ve gone through a couple of starters since then and need to do something different now that my warranty has expired. I have a buddy with a similar build that added push-button compression releases after his second starter replacement and his starts great now. I know the biggest changes I’ve noticed on other bikes I’ve owned have always come from head/cam work, but I really can't afford to get too radical right now.
When I wind this bike up I’m at 100 mph when I hit 4th gear and right at 120 mph when I shift into 5th at 6200 rpm. Getting to 100 mph doesn’t take long (3rd gear is awesome), but the pull from 4th to 5th takes a little while. I’m getting older, plus both the bikes and I are getting heavier, so I don’t do this every day; but I do have a long, secluded stretch of road near my home where I like to go for an occasional adrenalin rush. The rest of my time on the bike is spent with year round highway cruising between 65-85 mph (with occasional bursts) on 50 mile round-trips to work and 1000 mile round-trips to visit family.
I'm currently looking at the S&S 551 or 583 Easy Start Cams. I can do that pretty cheap and don't even have to pull the heads. One of my buddies, that seems to know a great deal than I do about lift and duration, told me that I should go with the 583, but I'm wondering if there will be too much of a difference on the low-end during take off. You have to feather the clutch and throttle to get all of that weight going now. He also told me that I could get a regular cam with better duration and valve timing and the starting wouldn't be an issue at my current 10:1 compression ratio. What I'm asking if there is anyone out there that could tell me about these two cams or recommend another grind that will work well with my setup. I wouldn't mind a little more power and definetly got to start better.
Thanks for any suggestions!
