you don't have to but it would be wise. But because of HD's notoriously low oil pressure,
I would also invest in a better oil pump.
The upgraded cam plate has no outer bearings. Relies on oil film to keep from seizing.
I did the upgrade with HD parts, but used a fueling oil pump (I also added performance Andrews cams while there) I think because of the deals I got, I spent about $400 on all the parts.
I find the bike starts easier and quicker (less pressure on cam chain), revs faster too.
But that could be the better cams. Have about 15 psi oil pressure at warm idle and 40 psi at warm cruise. Way better than stock.
