Hey guys anyone changed the fuel filter in the gas tank? wondering if it looks as easy as it looks in the pictures of the parts manual?

 

Not to bad, I remember the hardest part is breaking the "crimped" clamps off the rubber hoses. I removed to pump with it and did it out of the tank.

Guys why does my parts manual show the fuel filter but not my service manual? don't get me wrong I guess I'm glad I have both.

 

Good question, It really should be in a service manual. On my 88 FLH, I just un hooked the fuel line & un threaded the petcock. It came right out, I cleaned the screen & re installed. I used permetex gasket sealer on the threads because it's fuel resistant just to make sure it wouldn't leak!

just make sure when you do it, you pay special attention to how it seats inside the tank. I left mine out of the tank for awhile and came back to it later, I had to just be patient and figure it out by playing with it. Its not as hard as it looks, just intimidating if you have big hands like me. lol

I had a fuel filter issue in 08 on my EFI Ultra and its not as hard as it seems.

Parts needed...
1 filter ($60)
1 gasket for plate
1 package of screws which contains the plastic seals
2 small regular hose clamps for 1/2 " hose

first off the filter needs to be changed about every 20-25K miles from what I was told. I was also told that you can use small hose clamps instead of the factory style hose clamps.

I first drain all the gas, then I had to remove the center console that revealed a 4x5 plate.
marked wires to gas guage and unplugged.
Remove the nut that secures the filter.
remove clamp that holds the filter.

Inspect the hoses to make sure they haven't been rubbing on each other or the tank causing a wear spot that would cause the bike to suck air.

Reinstall the lines making sure nothing is touching anything.
replace plate, gasket and new screws and your done.

60 bucks for a filter!!??!. Now freaking way, forget the in tank filter and put in an in-line filter for 5 bucks or so. An in-line filter will catch tons more garbage than the stock in tank screen.
