The dealer put HD synthetic in my tranny a few weeks ago while doing some other work. Find neutral is a PITA now. I had been running Amsoil so I want to switch back asap. Question: Is it important to have the bike up to operating temp before draining tranny fluid? If so can I just let it idle for about 15 minutes in my garage? We have about 10" of snow here so I'm looking for something to do.

 

Idling 15 minutes in the garage is tough on the motor and will do nothing for your cold tranny fluid.........If you can't wait to do it, just pull the plug this evening and let it drain overnight.

 

Being as cold as it is I don't think it would hurt to just let it drain. Being as cold as it is with snow you're not going to be riding so there's no hurry. Let it drain overnight if it would make you feel better. I don't think the tranny gears are turning in neutral so your tranny is not going to heat up that much or mix up any loose stuff. Since the dealer just changed it you probably don't have any loose stuff in there anyway. I know what you mean about the Syn3. If your using Amsol try the 75W90 gear oil. Big difference.

 

Read the thread about the Red Line Heavy Shock. It's great for the tranny and shifting will be a lot smoother. I have the same problem sometimes where I can't ride. I put mine up on the stand and let it idle in gear for about 15 minutes. Blipping the throttle once in a while to get the tranny going.

 

It will all drain out given time. Over two nights - are you in a hurry?!

 

Maybe you should try adjusting the clutch on the cable first. A few tuns might make all the difference in the world.

 

It ain't going to hurt leaving the syn 3 in the tranny until. It's almost Feb., soon the sun will shine and we can all go down that road. I'd wait until you can ride and warm up. That way you will be sure to empty most of the syn 3.

 

The purpose of warming the tranny up is to get any debris that has settled drained with the fluid. Changing the fluid without the warm up is going to be no worse than not changing the fluid until the next scheduled change.

Although, giving it plenty of time is a good idea. If the fluid is below 20* it could take a long time to drain off the gears.

 

There won't be enough debris to work about. Put a heater on it fot a couple of hours, pull the plug a leave it overnight.

 

The only way you will ever warm the tranny up is by riding it.Engine running will do nothing.As you have read pull plug let it drain overnight, refill.
