I just now subscribed to this site so i'm not sure if this is appropriate. I will figure it out.
I have an old 70's sportster I'm builiding/rebuilding/restoring whatever you want to call it.
The case has no numbers, neither does the frame. I etched both but they apparently never had numbers so I really don't know what year it is.
I'm thinking it's a 70 XLCH (electric start)
I have wiring diagrams, I have purchased all the correct color coded and correct diameter wiring. None of the diagrams i have show what the electrial symbols mean. All the components are numbered and identified but there are lots of symbols, mosly inline on the wiring. I don't know what they mean.
Any help would be appreciated.

why dont you just get the M-Can it plugs right into the ECM port and eliminates the cutting into wires

 

just adding to this, mods delete it if it's not the right place.

There's a guy who sells 11X17" laminated wiring diagrams on eBay. They're I think $20. They're color coded according to his description which I assume means that each run is shown in the corresponding wire color. Never seen em in person, but here's his seller page on eBay:
