Does Dino oil expand more than sync oil?

My 97 RK had 2 marks on the dip stick, one for cold and one for hot.
My 08 RK has only one mark HOT, and when I check the oil cold, it
sits right at the FULL HOT mark........Is it overfull?? Tenn.Vol.

 

Don't know about the expansion rate between dino and sync oils, but I will say that your engine is overfilled. The level should be in the middle of the dipstick when cold.

 

Yep. Sounds like you have a tad too much in there.
I've seem mine expand more that expected once hot though, even when the cold level was correct.

 

If it does it's not enough to notice on a dipstick.

The cold oil check is not very accurate, where is the oil level when it's hot?

 

That's were mine is when cold.
Will raise to almost full when hot.
I think dino and syn. will expand about the same.

 

Just curious: What actually makes the "cold" level less accurate than the "hot" level.
Been checking mine both ways several times and found no difference between the two accuracy-wise. Mostly check 'em cold now and halfway between the cold and hot marks is always dead on.

 

I'm curious as well. It almost seems like it'd be less so on the hot check?

However I don't see any mark for cold check on my FLH. (My 04 had a cold check line) The HD mailer that just arrived Thursday discusses a problem with over-filled FLH's. I don't have the article here now.

 

Can't answer You question on the difference on the hot/cold check, but when I change the oil on My 08UC I refill with 3-1/2 qts of oil. This brings the level up to center between the add and full mark. after a warm up ride, it comes up to full hot mark.

 

I think thats what I will do, pull a 1/2 qt. out and from now on at change just add
3 and 1/2 qts. But I have already blown my "O" rings out of the push rods covers.
I sucked some oil today before we rode to Raleigh, NC. and it blew very little out
of the tubes. Tenn.Vol.

 

The owner's manual says:
"Oil level cannot be accurately measured on a cold engine."
That leads me to believe the cold check is just a pre start up inspection to ensure there is a sufficient amount of oil so you don't damage your motor when you start it.
