Default Change from 5 Speed To 6 Speed

A good friend of mine has an 04 Screaming Eagle Electra Glide with the standard 103 in motor on it. He has been toying with the idea of dropping some money on a transmission upgrade to a six speed, Harley or Bakker but leaning toward Harley. We ride about 8 to 10k a year. I was just wondering how many of you have made this switch and if you found it worth while. Cost wise, performance wise, highway riding. I'm not talking about the newer bikes now coming with the 6th gear. Actually changing over to a 6 speed. I didn't have a 6th gear in my Wide Glide and now that I have it frankly if I didn't have it I don't know that I'd miss it. Anyway I told him I'd throw it out there and see what comes back. Thanks in advance>>>

I have heard good things about Baker. If I was changing mine, thats the way I would go.
For an 04 EG, Baker makes only a 5 to 6 speed conversion. 07's and newer can upgrade from 6 to 7 speed.

I put an HD in mine. Picked it up off ebay with about 3000 miles on it. I think the gear ratios are better than stock and really the way they should be from the factory. My mpg actually increased. On the freeway it's mostly 70 mph in 5th gear at 3000 rpm. Sixth gear gets me 75pmh at 2800 rpm.

I don't get the extra gear thing. I have actually lowered the gearing on my old 5-speed so I can use top gear more of the time, instead of rowing it along on the gearbox. Just completed a 2,500 mile tour on it and am happy. I won't be getting any extra gears for my 'old lady'!

I put the HD 6 speed on my 2004 Road King. I put about 40K on it. Never a problem. The gear ratios are identical to the 5 speed, but 6th is an overdrive.(0.86?)

Tell your friend to save his money, you don't need a 6 speed.

Did Baker go to a 7 speed to stay in business now Harley ships 6 speed stock? Just asking!

The six speed is great if you ride a lot at high speed. I live in the west and we have a lot of 75 m.p.h. speed limits and generally longer distances between towns than back east. I have a S.E. sixer in my non tourer. I love it, but I ride faster than some people who live and ride in other locales. It all depends on what is important to you, and how you ride.

i've got a couple of friends who have 5 speed roadkings. when i've ridden their bikes, i miss the six speed my 08 sg has. before i was used to the six speed though, five seemed like plenty.
