Before I had my Heritage I had an '07 Streetbob and hung out on the Dyna section. There's a guy, Jackyl that has a great tank lift kit for Dynas and I assume he has them for other models as well. All they Dyna guys that got one raved about it. They look great and everyone seems happy with the product and the customer service. Look him up.

Oh ya tons of there are quite a few of us in the softy community that have the tank lifts on our bikes. Mine included. $20 on ebay comes with everything to lift the front 2 and 3 inches. If you do a seach "Tank lift" you'll find tones of info on it. Here is mine with 2" lift installed. Subtle but nice. In the 3 rd pic look at the lower left you can see it.

Its not a difficult job and like others have said its not uncommon.
In fact there's a couple of write ups in Mud's DIY section on making your own lift brackets.
Here's one;

Here's another, a bit more involved.

And another one with an integrated Ram mounting for a GPS

And another simpler one

Any of the ones I have here can be easily adapted to fit a Softail.
Have fun.

It's a funny thing... I didn't lose any fuel capacity. In fact can now put 5.27 gallons in my 5 gallon tank. What I did lose though is capacity of reserve... that is I don't have as much fuel as before when I switch over to reserve. I can still go 221 miles before I am pushing the bike, but more of the miles are on regular tank setting rather than reserve setting.
