Default 96 Heritage softail cough and sputter!!

Hello brothers,

Hope you all can help me out. Went for a ride just a few minutes ago, the weather is 98degrees outside and took the HD out for about a 4 mile ride arround town. Prior to taking off I let the bike warm up a bit for about 5minutes and then rode off. Well when I got back and pulling into the garage I hit the switch on my handlebars to turn the HD off and it sputtered and coughed like and old car then shut off.

This has never happened to me since owning the bike and the only thing I've done recently is change the oil and that's it. Any ideas on why it would do this? bad gas maybe????? Any ideas or suggestions is greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you!

UPDATE:

I took it for another ride just now for about 4 miles and got back home and turned it off with the ignition switch and it shut off fine. I did however turn the idle down just a bit. I've noticed that my softail has always idled high. I have Mikuni Carb and occasionally it's done the cough/sputter after riding and turning off the bike with the ignition switch. I was thinking maybe bad gas or high idle.

Anythoughts or comment is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Start your bike.Turn idle mixture screw in til bike starts to die. Then, back it out 1 1/2 to 2 turns. That shoul be the correct setting. For more carb tuning tips go to www.nightrider.com

+1 on the above but do it when the engine has reached operating temps, say 180*-200*.
