Default 92 electra glide starter question

I've got a 92 electra glide with a starter acting up. some times it works right away and other times I have to push the button a few times. Should I replace the starter? or is it a relay solenoid issue? My manual does not give a whole lot of info. If I replace the starter what brand do you like. Thanks for your help. Paul D.

Acts up like push the starter button and no click no sound at all ? Might pull the plunger end cap off and check the contacts They're cheap about 25 bucs and clean off the relay terminal on the starter housing where the wire comes in from the starter relay

I had a similar issue on my 95. Intermittent start, or click and no start.
I added another 5 pin relay near the battery to feed juice directly from the battery to the starter connection.

Wait till the starter acts up and then test it by applying voltage directly from the battery to the starter where the green wire is connected. If this causes the starter to engage, then adding the relay will probably solve your problem.

Buy any bosch style 5 pin relay from an auto store. About $7.
A 4 pin relay will also work. It won't have 87a which isn't used.

Connect the Green wire that was originally connected to the starter to 86.
Add a wire from 85 to ground.
Connect a wire from the positive side of the battery to 30.
30 is connected to 87a when the coil is not charged so don't connect anything to it.
30 will be connected to 87 when you press the starter button, so connect a wire from there to where the green wire was originally connected to the starter.
This will provide full battery voltage to the starter to engage the solenoid.

I hope this cures what ails you.

I have not had any problems since doing this.

Galtjunk, Thanks for the info. I'll try that tonight and let you know how it works out.
Thanks, Paul D.

Hey Galtjunk, I'm gonna add a relay per your instructions. I'm a little confused on one thing. Are you saying don't connect anything to 87A? And are you saying to connect a wire from 30 to where the green wire originally went to the starter? Am I understanding that correct? Thanks,
KC

I reread your post and I think you're saying to connect a wire from 87 to the starter. Correct?
