I took the plunge and bought the Kuryakyn slide mount for our TP, OMG, what did I set myself up for!!

The mount was in a few parts and a lot of bolts from the box, I started setting up and VOILA!! it would not fit to my detachable mount...........ARRRRRGGGGHH!!!!

Called Kury, guy on the other end gave me the scoop:

Seems in the late 90's early 00's the MoCo had quite a few detachable bases, mine was more than likely a late 90's and NOOO it will not work on it. CRAP, another load of cash to the stealer for a newer style mount and more hardware cause you can't just buy the bushing/bolts to make the last connector point, almost at $500 for putting this thing on. THEN to make it even better you need six hands, fingers 8" long and a holding fixture to install the entire mess on the TP box.

All in all it still looks good, the ride is filthy and I have as yet to put the wife against the TP to see if she is happy. I included a pic of the old rack.

 

OBTW, I will probably put a Razor pak on the old mount or a luggage rack of some kind and continue to use it, as to the slide mount it take a gorilla and a small elephant to get it to "Slide" so I expect it to not get moved much. I am figuring it raised the TP by about 3/4" but it did stiffen the mount some as the first ride it didn't 'bobble' much as I could see in the mirror. Three+ hours for start to end assemble not including road time to get more stuff, instructions still suck from Kuryakyn.

 

Did a few refits to make the unit fit better, added self adhesive foam to the TP box bottom at the boltings for shim to the slider then liberally dry silicone lubed the slides; works great, fits tidily and slides easily, will anchor fully as the latches are applied and the wife is happier.

The $1350 price tag plus it won't fit pre '09 bikes is a shutdown for me!! The unit I installed is just fine for two up and repositions the TP for the wife to lean back some and get her heat off of me on those really hot days in the saddle. When you slide it full forward it allows a small bag to capture as a backrest for solo and extra gear.

 

I know that no one will probably see this, but just so you know that Sliding Tour Pack from www.legendsmotorcycles.com will fit older than 2009 bikes. They make them from 2000 and newer touring bikes. Plus they have one for the 2000 and newer Softails also. The reason they are $1350 is because they are made there in their own shop in Springville, UT. They cut the pieces out, bend them, weld them and then they found the best chrome shop and powder coaters in the state for the finishes. We all know that chroming and powder coating isn't cheap. I used to work there and help make and install these on customer bikes. I have since then moved on to greener pastures but I will still say that these are well made and you will get your money's worth. PLUS that price tag includes a custom three-piece seat that is much more comfortable than others out there! Even the 2-time Hoka Hey champion rode that seat both years he won! Buy quality the first time so you won't have to buy over and over again!

I put a Kuryakyn slide on my 09 Ultra a couple of years ago. It works fine however if I move it back more then a couple inches the wife runs out of seat, making it uncomfortable. So it never gets moved, really worth the money, maybe yes maybe no.

 

I put the Kury sliding unit on my 09 FLHP to address 2 problems:

• On police bikes the TP needs to be raised in order for the saddle bag lids to open and not hit the TP -- this unit raised it just enough for the lids to clear.
• I made some mods shown here to get the slider to come forward to support my back when the TP was mounted on the solo rack.

I rarely slide the unit...once it is in place it just stays there. I have about 10K on it and it has worked fine. Here are some shots of it on the solo rack:

Hey Mike. When I purchased my 2009 UC last year, the previous owner had installed the sliding "TP Relocation" mount (I'm not sure the brand, but it looks just like the one pictured in the OP). I'm not sure how different the pre-2009 models are, but it worked like a champ on my 2009.

After I purchased the bike, I installed HD's TP disconnect kit. The only real problem I had was with it... the front two bolts that hold the TP relocation mount's "stop bar". Those holes are not on the TP detachable base. I marked the holes from the relocation base onto the detachable base and drilled them myself... bolted it all up and it worked great!

The OP mentioned difficulty in sliding the relocation mechanism... I have to keep mine sprayed with WD-40 to keep it sliding smoothly. It gets a bit gritty and gummy after a while. I cover the bags and rear fenders and give it a good spray when it gets too difficult to move. I swap my TP on/off regularly and usually keep it in the forward-most position when riding 2-up. I have to slide it back to remove the seat screw when I take the TP off.
