While shopping for new bars I came across the following on the West Coast T-Bars site.

Apparently there's a massive design flaw in the oil pan and we're all going to die if we don't buy a skid plate.


I hate scare tactics in selling and I haven't heard of this on the forum, but I thought I'd check. Anyone have this issue? Anyone build or buy a skid plate to resolve it?

 

My personal opinion is that it's nothing but BS scare tactics. I've bottomed my bike out a couple times and the first thing to hit is the mount for the kickstand. Even if the kickstand mount wasn't there, the oil pan doesn't sit lower than the frame. I've seen people post all kinds of problems and complaints here on this site, and I've yet to see anyone post about a busted oil pan.

 

im lowered on 10.5 inch struts and i hit my kickstand before anything. I also avoid potholes and speedbumps like the plague. It all comes down to watching the road. if youre not a moron you really won't have an issue.

 

Mine's dropped 1.5"... I've scrapped the skid 'bar' (that’s welded to the frame tube) over speed bumps... no damage to the pan. Thanks MoCo.

 

'06 and later have the frame to take the brunt of any impact and on the '05 and earlier I haven't seen anything under the bike in the way of damage more than the jiffy stand spring wearing into the oil pan.

Of course there is always the freak acident to take exception to....

 

The only design flaw in the Dyna oil pans are from the 90's models stripping out the freaking drain plug. This is bogus scare tactics to sell parts.

 

I was killed 10 years ago when my dangerously protruding oil pan struck a refrigerator that fell off a delivery truck on I-90.

You hit something big enough to rupture your oil pan and your going fast enough to worry about oil on the rear tire, thats gonna be the least of your problems I'm thinkin!!
