My brake lever was rattling too, causing brake light to flutter. Camp for controls and lever was seperated a little. Loosened and pushed together. Problem fixed. Must have happened when I changed grips.

Both levers do have a plastic bushing that may be worn out.

There is a plastic little doo-hickey on the clutch lever, reminds me of a cable clamp. I think it's called an anti rattle clip. I've replaced mine twice in 80,000 miles. You have to remove the lever to see it, held on with a small screw.

I wonder if there would be a way of preventing this wear, like say often lubricating ?

Mine rattles also, but it doesn't bother me...

Thought of shimming between the lever and housing with shim stock cut out like flat washer(s), maybe even a piece of thin gasket material/vinyl/nylon/neo-poly-something-plastic sheet, but haven't gotten around to it yet. You could try a C-clamp to pull the two sides together, but it would be very small amount of movement necessary. And, if you happen to bend them together too much it may just crack the housing, or cause the lever to stick randomly. Gotta be careful when you become the engineer correcting something which may well be an intentionally acceptable part of the original design...
