Default Question on check engine lamp

Looking for an answer! I am a new owner of a softail heritage. The question I have is about the check engine lamp. In the manual it states the lamp normally comes on when the ignition is first turned on and remains on for approx 4 secs as the engine management system runs a series of self-diagnotics. This was true when I first got the bike, but now it never comes on. I asked the dealer about it, but they told me there was not a problem unless the light comes on when riding the bike and it remains on. The question I have is should it come on when I first turn the ignition on and run the diagnostic check or does it matter if it never comes on?

It is supposed to come on for those few seconds when ignition is turned on, do you also have the run/stop switch set to run on the bars?

If it is not coming on....I suspect there is a problem, possibly even the LED in the tank console. If it never comes on during the self diagnostics, how would you know if there is a genuine check engine light and fault code when driving? There could be a problem with the indicator and then you would never know if there was a current fault condition in the control system.

I would make them check it out, maybe even create a scenario that is known to throw a fault and see if it comes on. You can check for fault codes using the odometer switch, do a fault code search on the forums here and you will get step by step instructions on how to do that.

Regards,
Larry

I also have a new 2011 Heritage with the same issue, only mine comes on intermittently. I had it checked out at a dealer in Columbia, SC and they did not find anything wrong, but after i left it was back to lighting up when I went to start the bike. Last night, after sitting for three days, the light did not come on when I went to start it. When it did come on, it was only on for a second...not like my 2007 Softail Custom where the light would stay on for three-four seconds.

Check for codes.
The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Key On + Engine Off = Bulb Check

Unless you have modified the Fuel Injection System TTS Mastertune, Fuel Programmer, whatever . . . the stock computer will do a Bulb Check; unless there is a problem with the Bulb, the bulb wiring, or the computer. Even with modifications to most computers they will still do the Bulb Check.

FYI there is no code for a bad bulb, or bad bulb circuit.

A much easier way to access and clear the DTC's is to use MoCo's Hand-Held Code Reader P/N 32312-10

I have attached a complete list of all SAE OBD II Diagnostic Trouble Codes. There are 4,115 DTC's . . . sorry you asked? Harley-Davidson does not use very many of them; but these codes are specified by EPA legislation and so they are universal for all 1996 and newer vehicles. Even if Harley adds a new code in the coming years it'll be on this list. No matter what cage you drive . . . if it's 1996 and newer it's DTC's are on this list as well.

Boy I wish my 5000.00 Snap-on scanner at work would plug into my bike. I'm too lazy to use the dash and to cheap to buy a harley specific scanner.

Will this test to display trouble codes work for a 2003 Low Rider that is carburated?
On a recent trip, the check engine lamp illuminated about 4 or 5 times for a few seconds each time at highway speed. I pulled in the clutch and allowed the RPM fall to idle and the light went out each time. At that time, there was no irregular engine operation. After the lamp extinguished the last time, I started having intermittant misfires, coughing, spitting back through the carb, and generally running like crap. The lamp never came back on but the bike runs bad and pulling the choak VERY slightly smooths things out.

I would like to see if there are any stored codes that will help me figure out what is happening.
