Default HD Leather Jackets - "Made In...?

I would assume that all of MoCos leather jackets are made in another country.

Does anyone know when that process began.

Have my secondhand 60s HD jacket that only says "Harley Davidson" on it and under neath in script are the words "Quality Workmanship"

Have my original 70s HD Jacket that only says "AMF Harley Davidson". The inspection tag on this is all in English but all references to "produced by" and such are numbers.

The only "new" jacket since then was bought in 1990. It has the HD product label and tags but no reference to where it was made.

A 1998 used jacket I bought used clearly states on an attached tag that it was made in Indonesia.

In the past year, Harley has introduced a line of leathers "Made in America."

In the small print, you will see the leather comes form overseas.

Chances are the leather came from South America, was shipped to China for cutting and sewing and then to the good ol USA for lining and labels. Made in USA.

Shu, went through 10 pages of posts on HD jackets before I placed the query here. Everything related to jackets was nothing more than bashing MoCo about their products as well as pricing. I actually considered a "new" jacket but cannot handle all the logo stuff displayed all over them and so passed on the idea. One of the reason I like some of the older jackets is because of the "lack of" emblems. Yeah its on some of the snaps but not blatant.

Only reason I brought it up was because someone posted a comment on a jacket I had for sale and took a cheap shot (IMHO anyway) about its point of origin and my posting w/o knowing anything about me. And if the jacket fit me properly I would not be selling it because I like the quality of the leather and the fact that it has a snap in/out liner which is perfect for cold weather riding.

Really could give a $**** less about the reason why the guy posted, but it got me wondering when the outsourcing on jackets started. Plus got me wondering (since my AMF HD jackets have no such markings) if at some point someone (as in big government/garmet makers?) forced a requirement on leather companies to reveal the "source" of their product.

Well the one with the Indonesia tag made in 98 would be referring to Indo-China (I think) which would encompass Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam. So if overseas production started in the 80s (as suggested), I am wondering where in the US the 60s and 70 jackets were made.
