Default Fatboy Gas Tank Question

I have a carbed 98 Fatboy and I'm looking to upgrade it's looks but I don't want to paint over the original tins. My question is, will any split gas tank from the softails in the 90's work or can't I I mix and match. I see some good deals on used tanks but I don' t want to shell out the money for something that won't work. I also have a line on a new set of tanks from an 80's era heritage, would those work?

So, are you saying any split tanks during those years are interchangeable?

well, if u look in the internet fot Fat Bob tanks, it'll say the years the tanks are a direct replacement for them and it just say Softail, so I guess yea, they're interchangeable

84-99 Softails all use "Flatside" tanks. They come in a number of sizes and are rubber mounted. They are not the solid mounted Fatbobs from the Shovel era and they are not one piece tanks like Dyna's and Touring bikes. So search 84-99 Flatside tanks and your find what you need. 3.5 and 5 gallon are the most common but I have seen them in huge 6 gallon size as well.

I got a set of 84-99 flat side fatbob a/c style gas cap tanks when I changed out the tanks on my 92 fatboy. They fit perfectly. Go to my gallery to see some pics.
